The EBI specializes in a diverse portfolio of alternative energy enquiry to help achieve a clean energy future. We conduct a varied array of research in a collaborative institutional environment, bringing together bright minds across disciplines to cultivate a paradigm shift in energy science.
At the Energy & Biosciences Institute, we direct and facilitate collaborative, cross-disciplinary research that leads to sustainable real-world solutions across the supply chain. Sponsors and researchers benefit from the inevitable synergies of such collaborations.
The technological and economic transformation of today’s energy system to a cleaner, more sustainable, and more equitable system is inevitable; the eternal question is: How do we get there? The EBI’s broad core research focuses on not only today’s energy issues, but also those of the future generations, and the incremental steps in between. Every day, EBI researchers work to devise practical energy strategies and products that sequester carbon and shift the energy landscape while continuing to meet society’s energy demands.
The EBI’s work focuses on three energy themes: diverse sources, unifying storage, and utilization.
The EBI maintains a mission of sequestering carbon through the development of useful processes that advance the energy landscape while continuing to meet the power demands of society.
We are exploring aggressive research into progressive technologies for energy production, storage, and conversion such as novel battery technologies, electrochemical conversions, computational material sciences, and advanced biosynthesis.

Our research works to optimize fossil fuel systems while continuing to improve alternatives. In the near future it applies to progressing utilization of chemical intermediates to reduce the carbon footprint of fuels and hybridizing energy use. In the longer term our work is moving to bring clean energy sources to market.
